Personal papers illustrating the Girton experience

These papers include diaries, letters home, memoirs and autobiographical writings; also financial accounts. This list is arranged in broad chronological divisions.

GCPP Stephen

Personal Papers of Barbara Stephen, 1872-1945, née Shoresmith, later Shore Nightingale, wife of Sir Harry Stephen, educationist. Girton 1891. Papers include memoirs by Jane Frances Dove (Girton 1871) and Constance Maynard (Girton 1872) which cover the Hitchin / Girton experience during the early 1870s; also a letter from Anna Lloyd (Girton 1869) in which she recounts local reactions to the students at Hitchin.

GCPP Maynard

Personal Papers of Constance Louisa Maynard, 1849-1935, Principal of Westfield College. Girton 1872. Papers include receipt for first term’s fees; also poems which shed some light on the Girton experience.

GCPP Tebbutt

Personal Papers of Sarah Tebbutt, 1860(?)-1928, née Mason. Girton 1878. Papers include diaries, poems, songs, debating notes, letters.

GCPP LLD

Personal Papers of Margaret Llewelyn Davies, 1861-1944, social reformer. Girton 1881. Papers include letters to Margaret from her mother (not much detail on Girton but the catalogue entries quote those part of the letters which help to shed any light on Margaret’s time at Girton and the letters do mention a number of MLD’s contemporaries).

GCPP Muir

Personal Papers of Margaret Alice (known as Meta) Muir, 1862-1943. Girton 1881. Papers include photocopies and transcripts from tape of 48 letters, mostly to and from Meta Muir. Contemporaries include Janet Case (Girton 1881), Margaret Llewelyn Davies (Girton 1881), Ethel Sargant (Girton 1881), Rosalind Shore-Smith (Girton 1881), and Helena (Nellie) Sickert (Mrs Swanwick) (Girton 1882). Her father’s interest in and comments on her course (history) are, in themselves, valuable commentary on the texts and teaching methods of the period.

GCPP Zimmern

Personal Papers of Alice Zimmern, 1855-1939, educationist and suffragist. Girton 1881. GCPP Zimmern 3/1/1 is an article entitled ‘Lady Students at Cambridge. Girton College’, from London Society, May 1882, giving detail of the Girton buildings and rooms, daily life, transport, study, examinations and student activities.
GCPP Buckler Personal Papers of Georgina Grenfell Buckler, 1863-1953, née Walrond, classicist. Girton 1888. Papers include diaries 1889-91, and an article ‘A Girtonian of the Eighties’, written in 1928 and appeared in the Girton Review (archive reference GCCP 2/1).

GCPP Ford

Personal Papers of Cicely Ford, 1876-1960, social worker and deaconess. Girton 1894. GCPP Ford 1 includes letters written by Cicely Ford in 1954 reminiscing about her Girton years.

GCPP Chapman

Personal Papers of Maud Chapman, 1880-?, née Reep. Girton 1898. Papers include ‘Daily Routine’ and rules and regulations [circa 1898]; list of furniture provided by Girton for student rooms; and a list of subjects for study 1898.
