Eco-Storytelling Book Club

Find your bookish community within college

Find your bookish community within college, and become an active maker of change by imagining and creating your own stories and solutions.

Read and share ideas

This year, Girton College Library is launching The Eco-Storytelling Book Club, a new iteration of the Green Impact Excellence Project Award-Winning ‘Cambridge Ecofiction Bookgroup’. We aim to meet once a term to chat about a book in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is welcome to attend, and there’s no expectation to finish the books under discussion: our goal is to create opportunities for meeting other college members interested in engaging with conversations about the environment.

All the books are available to borrow from Girton College Library.

Make and create

Following the club’s tradition, we aim to create opportunities for sharing reads and discussions alongside other activities, such as invited speakers, movie nights, or making DIY publications. If you are looking for your bookish community within college, are keen to meet other writers and makers, or if you would like to try zine-making, improve your writing craft, or learn more about publishing your work, there will be a session for you.

There’s no expectation to attend every event, and we recommend you join our mailing list to keep in the loop (email Dr Marian Womack: mv251@cam.ac.uk)

  2. Michaelmas Book Club meeting.

Thursday 19 November (7 pm), Library Study Room D-34.

We will be discussing The Word for World is Forest, Ursula K. Le Guin’s fable of colonialism, extractivism, and environmental despoliation:

The Word for World is Forest book cover, Ursula K. Le Guin Publisher’s summary:
When the inhabitants of a peaceful world are conquered by the bloodthirsty yumens, their existence is irrevocably altered. Forced into servitude, the Athsheans find themselves at the mercy of their brutal masters.

Desperation causes the Athsheans, led by Selver, to retaliate against their captors, abandoning their strictures against violence. But in defending their lives, they have endangered the very foundations of their society. For every blow against the invaders is a blow to the humanity of the Athsheans. And once the killing starts, there is no turning back.

Available to borrow from Girton College Library.

  3. Winter social (DTBC): Open Mic Session with Future Karaoke (hosted by the Creative Writing Centre, Anglia Ruskin University)
