Swirles Court is a model of sustainable, purpose-built student-focused accommodation. It is the primary accommodation for Girton's postgraduate community and also houses some returning undergraduate students. It is located a short walk or cycle from the main Girton College site and is well-linked to West and Central Cambridge by a network of cycle routes.
It consists of 325 modern, single, well proportioned en-suite study bedrooms with kitchen facilities shared between four to eight students. Swirles Court offers state-of-the-art accommodation, with access to all of the main College site's facilities for Girton students, including the Dining Hall, Social Hub, swimming pool, tennis courts, gyms and library.
The accommodation comprises four buildings, each, three to five floors high and surrounded by green courtyards. The buildings over three floors high are equipped with lifts and there are adapted rooms for students needing level access accommodation.
Swirles Court has its own Porters’ Lodge which provides 24/7 support for students and controls access for non-residents. On the same floor as the Porters’ Lodge there are laundry facilities, a secure post box for each resident, and a room for study and socialising with network points. The site has Wi-Fi and there is a network point in each bedroom. The doors and entrances to the buildings are all accessible via card and the site has plenty of secure cycle parking.
Heating, lighting, power, water, basic insurance and internet are included in the residential fee.
Some 'green' highlights of the Swirles Court buildings are:
- High efficiency low temperature heating fed from district heating network, with high levels of insulation and triple glazing.
- Efficient flow rate showers, taps and toilets.
- Where necessary noise attenuated ventilation louvres and sun screening.
- Grey water to toilets – but yet to be brought on line by the University.
- BREEAM excellent rating.
- Roof mounted PV panels.
- SUDS (Sustainable Urban drainage) minimising impact on drainage network.
- Low energy lighting.
The accommodation is central to a new University community called Eddington which is part of the University’s expansion towards the north and west of Cambridge and is easily accessible to other parts of Cambridge.
Eddington is served by the U Bus that travels through the centre of Cambridge to the railway station and as far as Addenbrooke's Hospital. There is also a cycleway into Cambridge and up to the Main College site. There is a map of Eddington with transport links.
There is a Sainsbury's supermarket in the market square less than 5 minutes walk from the accommodation and two newly opened hotels, one with a restaurant and roof terrace bar.
Eddington is also very close to the West Cambridge site of the University with its science, technology and engineering faculties, Vet School, the main University Sports Centre and the newly opened West Hub.
