We are delighted to announce the election of Pareshbai (Paresh) Suryakant Patel (1981 Engineering) to a Bodichon Foundation Fellowship, in recognition of his exceptional philanthropic support – particularly in support of student bursaries – and his longstanding commitment to Girton's mission and values.

Paresh, co-founder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO of Florida-based HCI Group, Inc. is a champion of education and a passionate advocate for Girton College and its progressive stance on inclusive education. His commitment to removing financial barriers and expanding opportunity is reflected not only in his generosity to Girton, but also in his work with the Akshaya Patra Foundation, which provides meals to schoolchildren across India.

Paresh has played a transformative role in the lives of many Girton students. Over the past decade, he has supported 11 undergraduates in financial need through the Paresh Suryakant Patel Bursaries. As an endowed fund, these bursaries will continue to provide vital assistance for generations to come. In addition, Paresh has been a driving force behind Girton’s successful Class Bursary Gift programme, offering matched funding to seven other classes – an inspiring act that enabled the creation of several more bursaries.

As Paresh has said:

"Education gives the opportunity for people to leave their circumstances behind and that's why I am a big proponent of it at all levels."

Paresh’s own journey from East London to the forefront of American business leadership is a story of resilience, humility, and an enduring passion for education. Born into a family that emigrated from Kenya to the UK in the 1970s, Paresh excelled early, earning 12 O levels at Brampton Manor Comprehensive. In 1981, he secured a place at Girton to study Engineering – an experience he credits with helping him to thrive under pressure and develop the problem-solving skills that shaped his future success.

His career has spanned tech start-ups during the dotcom boom to co-founding and leading Florida-based HCI Group, where he brought innovation and stability to a challenged insurance sector.

Yet it is Paresh’s commitment beyond business that truly distinguishes him. His story is, as he puts it, “a charmed life,” marked not just by achievement, but by purpose and giving back. Whether encouraging fellow Girtonians to support Girton or helping ensure future generations have the opportunities he did, Paresh exemplifies thoughtful, values-led leadership. We are proud to honour him and grateful for his continued partnership.

The occasion was marked by a Ceremony of Admission, with music performed by Girton student Adam Titcombe.
