Upcoming Girton College Outreach Events

Join us for enriching masterclasses, immersive taster days, engaging talks, and exciting events. Experience hands-on learning, connect with like-minded individuals, and be inspired by thought-provoking discussions and activities.

These events provide a dynamic and supportive environment for personal and professional growth, whether you're a school student, teacher, or parent/supporter.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate requests for in-person Careers and HE Fairs for 2024-25. However, please do still let us know about your event by contacting access@girton.cam.ac.uk as we would be delighted to send some resources to be displayed. Together, we can discuss how we can best support your students with our upcoming programme of events for the year.

Third Party Programmes or Initiatives

If your programme or charity would be interested in working with Girton College, please complete our short form for your request to be considered.

Join us for a day filled with fantastic activities allowing Year 12 students to experience Oxbridge, 10:00-16:00 on 13 October. These days are very popular and include admissions talks from our Senior Admissions Tutor, a Personal Statement workshop, a tour of the college, a Q&A with current students, and a taster lecture from our world-class academics.

We are able to host 20 students per school and have limited availability. If you are a teacher from one of our Link Area schools and would like to attend this event, please contact access@girton.cam.ac.uk

Schools across Camden will have been contacted about an exciting opportunity to collaborate with us on a scheme aiming to bring schools together and offer localised outreach support. This scheme is available for students in Year 12 currently.

We hope that by establishing consistent contact via this scheme, students become familiar with the Outreach and Admissions team at Girton and respond well to the localised attention and support we are offering, rather than just in a one-off online session. Over time, we hope students will become inspired and excited to move forward through their educational journey, equipped with the critical skills needed to apply for more competitive universities.

The scheme currently includes an in-person talk at Westminster Kingsway College in January 2026 and a visit to Girton College in February-March 2026.

If you are a teacher in Camden and would be interested in joining this scheme, please contact access@girton.cam.ac.uk

Online events

Make sure to follow our social media accounts to keep up with our 'A Subject A Day in May' series.

It is important for students in Year 10-12 to be thinking about what subject they may want to study at University as early as possible, as the choices they make post-16 will impact what doors are open to them.

This will be a series of short videos giving a glimpse into the subjects and courses offered at Girton College. Viewers can hear from our own Fellows and students discussing different aspects of the courses, whether that is a structural overview of the content, or papers that they particularly enjoy learning or leaching about.

This webinar will take place on Thursday 6 November, 17:00-18:00. More information including a registration form will be advertised soon.

University of Cambridge events

All up-to-date information on events organised by the central University team and Colleges can be found here.

Applications for the next STEM SMART programme are open now and close on 31 October 2025. You can find more information, including how to register, on our webpage.

The Shadowing Scheme is a university access scheme designed by current Cambridge undergraduates and run by Cambridge Students' Union (Cambridge SU). The Scheme is for home students in their penultimate year of secondary school, with little family history of attending University, who go to schools where few people progress to University. We also prioritise students who:

  • Are eligible for free school meals
  • Are refugees
  • Have caring responsibilities
  • Have been/are in local authority care
  • Are estranged

In February, participants come to Cambridge, 'shadow' an undergraduate mentor who is studying a subject they are interested in, attend lectures, stay in student accommodation, meet lots of current students at a range of events and activities, and get advice on applying to Cambridge from staff and students.

Participants can also stay in contact with their Mentor after the Scheme, and attend online application and study skills sessions in summer, in order to help them make well-informed, successful University applications.

The Scheme is free to all Shadows, including accommodation, meals and travel.

Applications are open now and students can register via the SU webpage.

The Davidson Inventors Challenge 2026 edition is now open for registration.

The Davidson Inventors Challenge (DIC), our annual UK-wide STEM innovation competition online,  is an outreach and widening participation initiative we have been running  here at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology since 2020 in collaboration with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and the Association of Science and Technology Innovation (ASTI) in Malaysia.

Sign-up deadline for student teams: Friday 26 September 2025

The Academic Attainment Programme is a completely free two-year programme for around 1000 high-achieving UK state-school students in Year 12 (S5 – Scotland/Year 13 – N.I) who meet certain Widening Participation criteria. You can find the full list of criteria here. The aim of the programme is to support students like you in their A-Level (Scottish Highers/IB) studies so that you can reach your potential, achieve the highest possible grades, and make applications to competitive universities.

As part of the programme, students will get access to subject-specific enrichment classes led by experts, to allow them to develop and expand on their knowledge of the content of their A-Levels (Scottish Highers/IB), and to help them to achieve the very best grades in their examinations. They will also attend Peer Discussion Groups, to prepare them for the university environment by improving their oracy and their problem-solving skills. Students will also receive advice from the Lucy Cavendish College Admissions Team on every stage of the university application process across the two years, and they will complete a Supracurricular Exploration Project to encourage them to think more seriously about degree choices. Finally, students will also receive subject-specific revision guidance in the lead up to their exams, to ensure they are well-placed to get the best possible grades.

We have had some fantastic results from previous participants, with 9 in 10 receiving offers to study at Russell Group universities, and participants almost doubling their chances of being offered a place at either Oxford or Cambridge. Following the 2022-23 programme, 95% of students felt more confident in their A-Level (Scottish Highers/IB) studies, and 95% of respondents felt they knew how to make a competitive application to Cambridge and other top universities. Our website has even more information about this exciting programme, and it also contains the link to apply.
