Information for Summer 2024 Lifelong Learning applicants
Girton College is located just over two miles from the city centre of Cambridge and the College is easily accessed by public transportation or by taxi.
Most commonly used areas in the Girton College buildings are on the ground floor and accessible. Bedrooms are available on the ground floor as well as on higher floors, and some of those on higher floors are accessible by lift and others by stairs. Stairs generally have continuous handrails, although some are rather winding and difficult. Most areas in the Girton College grounds are also level and accessible, with few steps.
Being able to participate in activities in the city centre and on field trips outside Cambridge is a real highlight for many taking part in the summer school. Cambridge is an historic city, and consequently many sites of interest are less accessible. In order to enjoy all summer school activities to the fullest, participants are therefore likely to need to be able to manage full flights of stairs, some without handrails, be able to walk around a mile on uneven pavements and cobblestones, and have the ability to stand for an hour or two in museums and other places of interest. If participants have any questions about the suitability of this summer school for them they should contact the Director of Global Programmes who will be very happy to discuss their needs.
The application deadline is 3 June 2024, but applications may still be accepted after this date if places are available.
Places on the summer programme and accommodation options are filled on a first come, first served basis, so early application is strongly advised.
To reserve a place on the summer school, and any accommodation chosen, a non-refundable deposit must be paid. The deposit is £500 for those attending for the full two weeks, and £250 for those attending for just one week.
The balance of the summer school fees is due by 10 June 2024. Failure to pay the balance by this date may result in the summer school place being offered to another applicant.
If an applicant must cancel their place on the summer school, the following refunds shall be offered:
- A full refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit) if the place is cancelled by 10 June 2024
- A 50% refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit) if the place is cancelled by 8 July 2024
- A 25% refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit) if the place is cancelled by 22 July 2024
- After 22 July 2024 no refund shall be made
The College will endeavour to provide the academic courses and social programme as described on these web pages. In the unlikely event that an instructor has to withdraw their course due to illness or other exceptional reason, the College will seek to offer a replacement course in the same subject area. In the unlikely event that, for reasons beyond its control, the College is unable to provide elements of the social programme as described, suitable alternative activities shall be offered.
The College is unable to accept liability for any loss or damage to personal property.
All applicants are strongly advised to take out sufficient travel and medical insurance to cover the duration of the summer school, together with any journey to or from the UK. They should also take out vacation cancellation insurance.
In submitting an application form to the Lifelong Learning Summer School, applicants agree to abide by the College rules.
