Research themes

I have a wide-ranging teaching remit, from directing orchestras in Cambridge to coaching, auditioning and examining, giving solo performances with students, supervising dissertations, advising on professional development and lecturing on performance. My research interests are in leadership, particularly in repertoire composed before the advent of silent conducting, and in the relationship between notation and the performer.

Other

I arrived at Girton for a two term sabbatical from the busy life of a touring musician and have stayed here in a part-time capacity to enhance College music – the Fellows, students, and atmosphere in Girton make it a wonderful environment in which to work.

Outside Cambridge I am co-leader of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and direct chamber orchestras all over the world. I am Director of Studies for the European Union Baroque Orchestra, Artistic Director of Music for a while and Head of Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music.
