Research themes

I currently research changes in Mediterranean and British coastal ecosystems. This has involved the use of modern methods of obtaining field data such as LIDAR and digital field mapping techniques.

I was one of the first male fellows to join Girton when College went mixed in 1977 although I had supervised Girton students for several years before that.

Prior to lecturing in Cambridge, I assisted in founding the Department of Biological and Environmental Science at the University of Ulster. I have also worked as an ecological consultant variously to ARC, National Trust, DETR, English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage, and Anglian Water.

I was overseas assessor for the Project Evaluation Committee of the Japanese Institute for Humanities and Nature from 2011-2017 and I am currently a member of the assessment panel for the Independent Social Research Foundation.

In 2012, I received the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s Best Practice Award.

I am a trustee and treasurer of Franciscan Aid and also a trustee and past chair of the ACE Foundation.
