Girton Jazz welcomes American saxophone legend Scott Hamilton as a thrilling addition to its programme. Born in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1950s, Scott Hamilton began his career in local swing bands before moving to New York and working with the ‘King of Swing’, Benny Goodman, launching his international career as a sax soloist. With a discography running to nearly 150 albums, including collaborations with Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims, Gene Harris, Buddy Tate, Rosemary Clooney, Al Cohn and countless others, he is arguably the most important jazz musician to carry the mainstream tenor sax tradition into the 2020s. Resident now in Italy, Scott Hamilton continues to perform all over the world, including regular sell-out residencies at Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, delighting legions of fans with his renowned tone, effortless swing and flawless execution of the mainstream style.
Girton College, home of the popular Girton Jazz scheme, is honoured to be hosting Scott’s one-night-only visit to Cambridge, which he makes with his outstanding regular UK band of John Pearce (piano), Dave Green (bass) and Steve Brown (drums).
Early booking is advised as seating is limited.
"Scott Hamilton has always made a subtle art sound easy... caresses old standards with urbane ecstasy."
