Research themes

I work on medieval Latin language and literature. At present I am editing works by Gerald of Wales, a prolific Anglo-Latin author of the late twelfth century, for the series ‘Oxford Medieval Texts’. More broadly, I am interested in manuscripts, textual criticism, the evolution of the Latin language, and syntax and style in Latin prose. My primary periods of interest are Late Antiquity (c. 350–600) and the long twelfth century.

Responsibilities

I teach Latin language and literature to students of all levels: in College, primarily Classical Latin; in Faculty, medieval and renaissance Latin.

Other

I studied at Toronto (BA) and Trinity College, Cambridge (MPhil and PhD). After leaving Cambridge, I worked at Oxford, at the Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes (Paris), at the British School at Rome, and again at Oxford, as a JRF at Jesus College. I returned to Cambridge in 2022.

With Tania Demetriou and Andrew Taylor, I convene the University’s Neo-Latin Seminar.
