Research themes

I study animal communication and the information content in highly social and cooperative species, particularly cooperative predators such as wolves and dolphins. I use new technologies and artificial intelligence to build networks of autonomous sensors that listen for the sounds of animals in the environment and track their movement and activities. I am using these networks to reduce human-tiger conflict in Nepal, and to preserve critically endangered gibbons in Vietnam. By studying the communication systems of intelligent and social animals, we can also understand more not just about their ecology and conservation, but also about the evolution of our own language.

I also write popular science books – The Zoologist’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Why Animals Talk.

Responsibilities

I supervise IA Mathematical Biology and IA Evolutionary Biology.
