Symposium

On Saturday 8 June 2024 we will be hosting a Symposium and Dinner for all Girton Modern and Medieval Languages alumni, Fellows and students. Below is a draft programme for the day and information on how to register. 

Programme 

14.00    Registration and Tea and Coffee 

14.30    Welcome from the Mistress, Dr Elisabeth Kendall, and first part of the Symposium. 

Part 1: Research. Past and Present

Bibas and Butler: Two Early Girton MML Fellows by Professor Emma Gilby, Professor of Early Modern French Literature and Thought at the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics 

Habiter la colère’: Rage, Re-embodiment and Resistance in Bintou Dembélé’s Choreography’ by Dr Jasmine Cooper, Fairlie-Hutchinson Research Fellow in French at Girton College 

'¡Arriba los pueblos oprimidos! Anticolonialism, race and violence in Basque radical nationalism.' by Dr María Reyes Baztán, Jean Sybil Dannatt Official Fellow in MML at Girton College

16.00    Tea and Coffee

16.30   Part 2: Student Experiences. Past and Present

During the second part of the symposium, we will hear from current students who will talk about their experiences of Modern and Medieval Languages, as well as two Girton alumni who will talk about their studies and where the subject has led them since graduating.          

18.00    Drinks Reception

19.00    Dinner

Tickets

The price for the dinner is £60.00 per person or £42.50 for non-alcohol tickets, this price includes pre-dinner drinks and a three course meal. The symposium is free to attend.  You are welcome to bring up to three guests. Current Modern and Medieval Languages students will receive a small subsidy from this price.
