Resources for teachers and supporters
Welcome to the Girton College Resources for Teachers page! Here, you’ll find a comprehensive collection of tools, materials, and support designed to empower educators in their classrooms. Our resources aim to enhance supporters of applicants and foster student engagement. Girton College is committed to supporting your efforts as an educator.
As always, if there are any particular resources you would like, please email our Schools' Liaison & Outreach Officer.
These sessions are designed to support you in guiding students through the University of Cambridge application process. Throughout the year, the series provides timely advice and practical guidance on key stages of the admissions journey.
Each session includes a live Q&A with experienced admissions staff, offering you the opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable insight.

We recognise that Student Finance can be difficult to understand and we want to make sure the process is as clear and accessible as possible.
Teachers, parents and supporters can get in touch with specific financial queries, and we will respond with the guidance of our very own Financial Welfare Officer.
How to Support Students Applying to Cambridge
Have a look below at our top tips for supporting students who are applying to Cambridge.
- Encourage students to think openly about possible options.
- You know your students best - try to encourage their interests, while sharing your own experiences if you feel comfortable doing so.
- Encourage students to do their own research rather than trusting old myths and stereotypes about universities and courses.
- Remind them that they have lots of options at UCAS, so it's worth giving Cambridge a go - and if unsure, visiting on an open day!
- There are in-person and online events for schools and students of all types, and in all subjects across the University of Cambridge. Students should not just follow the crowd but should pursue their own interest, keeping an open mind about what might interest them.
- Share events with your students and encourage them to apply if it is relevant to their interests!
- Be in contact with your Link Area College, as they can support you with events and resources. Check out their websites for further info.
- Our list of upcoming events can be found on this page.
- Super-curriculars are how students identify and cultivate their own interests. It's not about ticking boxes or building CV points, it's about the individual's own journey to their degree subject.
- The starting point is often something they've covered or touched on in school, so the teacher can play a really important role in suggesting enrichment activities or resources.
- It's really important to encourage students to think creatively. It doesn't just have to be reading a book. Any way that they can get deeper into their subjects, develop their interests, and above all think critically about their subjects, is key.
- Be specific and precise.
- How is this student performing in relation to their cohort? Top 50%? Top 10%? It’s helpful for us to know.
- Check out the University of Cambridge webpages for further advice.
Teachers' Mailing List
Girton produces a termly newsletter which includes a variety of resources, events and competitions at Girton and throughout the collegiate community.
Teachers can sign up to our mailing list by completing this short online form. Upon completion you will receive the current newsletter. Sometimes it is best to include a generic schools email address (such as reception, libraries or careers) to ensure your school continues to receive this tailored information.

College Competitions
Girton’s Humanities Writing Competition is for students in Year 12 (or equivalent) who have an interest in the Humanities. Students submit an essay based on one or more objects selected from the College’s small antiquities museum, the Lawrence Room.
The competition is an opportunity for research and writing beyond the curriculum using one or more of the six objects as your focus. We accept essays or creative responses (such as dramatic monologues or short stories). Up to date information regarding our Humanities writing competition can be found here, and on our social media platforms.
This Competition is now closed for 2025-26.
Arranging schools visits
School group visits are bookable at Girton College. Get in touch, if you would be interested in bringing your school group to Girton. Please note that we prioritise visits with schools in our Link Areas.
We are happy to offer ad-hoc visits to schools, but to enable progression please consider signing up to our Pathways Scheme where we offer a range of cohort specific activities, webinars and workshops that in Key Stage 4 focus on raising aspirations and building familiarity with the University of Cambridge.
For Year 12, opportunities tend to focus more on preparing students to make applications to highly competitive universities including Cambridge. We can also work to tailor these visits to focus on areas of interest to teachers/students and assemblies to fit schools’ needs.
If you would like us to work with you and your students, please do get in touch.
We are able to support with HE/Careers Fairs at our Link Area Schools. Please get in touch if you have an upcoming event.
Our annual West Midlands Roadshows take place annually in March/April. Further information on our next event will be released in January 2027.
