Swirles Court

Swirles Court has 325 en-suite bedrooms for Graduate and Undergraduate students and is opening at the start of the 2017-2018 academic year. It is part of a larger new development which also includes housing for University staff and shopping facilities including a supermarket. Swirles Court is built around landscaped courtyards and has card controlled access to make it a secure environment.

It has good access to University and College facilities. It is located approximately a ten minute walk or five minute cycle from the main Girton College site, and is on the new Ridgeway cycle route from Girton to the City Centre, the West Cambridge site, the University Sports Centre and the Sidgewick site. There is secure, covered bicycle storage in the basement of each Swirles Court building. The development is connected by bus to the city centre, railway station and Addenbrookes Hospital / the Biomedical campus.

The bedrooms are arranged in clusters of four to eight students, who share kitchen facilities which include a seating area for all of the occupants of the flat as well as cooking facilities including a cooker, fridge, freezer and a microwave. There are two lockable cupboards per resident in each kitchen. The clusters are mixed sex with students from a mixture of different courses and different cohorts along the same corridor to foster diversity and communal living, while providing an environment that can be used for study.

The bedrooms are all en-suite, with the bathroom containing a toilet, sink and shower. There are rooms that can be used for students with mobility issues and other disabilities. All bedrooms will contain:

  • Bed and mattress (mainly three quarter doubles)
  • Chair / sofa
  • Wardrobe
  • Chest of drawers
  • Desk
  • Desk chair
  • Lamp
  • Bookshelf
  • Waste bin
  • Shelving
  • Large window
  • Bedding is not provided but a bedding pack can be bought from the college before students move in.

Swirles Court has its own Porters’ Lodge which provides support for students and controls access for non-residents. Next to the Porters’ Lodge there are laundry facilities, a secure post box for each resident, and a study room with network points. The whole site has WiFi.
The tenancies will be for 37 or 38 weeks for undergraduates depending on the University of Cambridge’s term dates.
