Geography Taster Day

Geography Taster Day

Thursday 26th January 2017

A day for Year 10s and 11s to encourage studying Geography at university.

Geography is one of the most exciting subjects to study at university. We live in an interdependent world caught up in chains of events which span the globe. We depend upon an increasingly fragile physical environment, whose complex interactions require sophisticated analysis and sensitive management. Geography at Cambridge includes both the physical and human aspects of the subject, and graduates go on to a very wide variety of careers.

Girton College will be running a Subject Day aimed at pupils who are currently studying Geography at GCSE to introduce the study of this subject at university level. The programme, which will take place at Girton College, will include sessions by University academics designed to inspire and enthuse Year 10 and 11 students who should be thinking about their A Level choices with regards to taking Geography and possibly studying this subject at university.

The day will:

·         Encourage students to keep and develop their interest in Geography

·         Demonstrate the value of studying Geography at university

·         Inform them about their A Level choices and how this will affect their university applications

Students will have the opportunity to meet with current undergraduate Geography students and  the day will include a buffet lunch. There is no cost to attend this event, although we regret we are unable to cover travel expenses or offer overnight accommodation.

We would like to invite schools and colleges to nominate up to two students for our Geography Taster Day, which is open to UK students currently in Year 10 or 11. There will only be around 30 places available and so nominating a student is not a guarantee they will be given a place.

To nominate one or more students please note that:

  • Students must be nominated by their schools, with no more than two nominations per subject per school.
  • Students should be taking GCSE Geography and be on track to achieve good GCSE scores, with an intention to study Geography or another relevant subject at A Level.
  • Please would teachers first check that nominated students are available to attend the Taster Day.

Please note that the deadline for nominations for the 2017 Geography Taster Day has now passed, and all places have been allocated. Please bookmark this site and check back next year for details of next year's event.
