Living and Learning

Generations of students, over many decades, have thrived in the space for thought provided by Girton's magnificent Victorian buildings, expansive gardens, multiple on-site sports facilities, reliable infrastructure and wide range of services. The main site is squarely at the cutting edge of the University's planned expansion to the North-west of the city meaning the College will become the gateway to Cambridge. To make the most of this A Great Campaign has supported a very special project:

 

A New Wing to complete Ash Court

Architects, Allies and Morrison have stepped into the shoes of three generations of the Waterhouse family to design the most significant building in 75 years on the Girton site. The scheme underlines Girton's historic commitment to providing excellent education set in facilities that offer a unique space for thought within the University of Cambridge.

 

The design is red brick and complements the existing Waterhouse buildings, creating a pleasing feature of vertical roof-height windows which face the gardens.

The development comprises 50 en-suite bedrooms (six of which are fully accessible for disabled guests), student kitchens, laundry and a colonnade. It also includes the refurbishment and external rebuilding (which was necessary for structural reasons) of the College's Grade II listed swimming pool and an ergo room and gym . The overall effect has been to create a great new fitness facility in this area for students, Fellows, staff and conference visitors to Girton, unrivalled by any other college.

 

This state-of-the-art new wing is 'green' and sustainable and has won the 2014 RIBA Special Award for Sustainability The building is super-insulated with triple glazed windows, high levels of air tightness and heat recovery from the room ventilation system. Renewable energy technologies have been installed with electricity-generating photovoltaic cells on the roof, and ground source heat pumps. In addition, the antiquated heating systems in Orchard Wing have been upgraded.

 

Ash Court's parking area has been re-landscaped and a new courtyard amenity  created between the bar corridor and the squash court.

 

It is also dual-use, serving students during the academic year, and accommodating conferences and events across the summer.
