Accommodation Overview

Undergraduate

Girton College provides accommodation to its undergraduate students for all years of their course. The student rooms are all single so students do not have to share. They vary in style and size, from the Victorian rooms in the original building to the modern en-suite rooms in Ash Court and Swirles Court. Apart from in Ash Court, tenancies are for 37 or 38 weeks depending on the University of Cambridge’s term dates. In Ash Court the tenancy is for 31 or 32 weeks as it does not include the Christmas Vacation.

First year undergraduate students live in the main College building and are allocated to a room before they arrive in College. Once they have a confirmed place at the College they will be contacted with more information. The rooms in the College building are arranged into corridors with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities on each corridor creating a sociable atmosphere for living and studying. There is an all-female corridor in College which female students can give a preference for. Adapted rooms can be provided for students with disabilities in Ash Court and Swirles Court.

Rooms for undergraduates from second year onwards are allocated through an annual student-run ballot; a student’s position on the room-choosing list being determined by the type of room they have had in preceding years. Second, third and fourth year undergraduates have a choice of rooms in the main College buildingAsh CourtSwirles Court or in a College-owned house.

Students pay a residence charge which includes accommodation and access to college facilities such as the swimming pool and cafeteria. The weekly rate within a cohort (year group) is the same regardless of the room. Through the room ballot system for second and third year undergraduates all students get a chance to live in rooms of different sizes and locations throughout their time at Girton. Apart from in Ash Court, where students move out over the Christmas Vacation, the residence charge includes the Christmas and Easter vacations, which means, students do not need to clear their room during the academic year. For more information on payments please see Undergraduate fees and charges.
