Online Lifelong Learning Winter School

New for January 2021!

Monday 11 January – Friday 22 January 2021

Founded in 1869 Girton College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. The College’s beautiful buildings and spacious grounds are located just outside the city centre, and Girton is well known for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

This online winter school gives lifelong learners from around the world the exceptional opportunity to experience something of Cambridge student life in the context of an online programme specifically designed for adult learners.

Participants will take a course entitled 'The Lives of Winston Churchill: from Victorian Britain to End of Empire, 1876-1965', which explores Churchill’s fascinating life in the context of an important period in British history.

The course will comprise seven and a half hours of live online teaching. There are no exams; participants study for the joy of learning. Course material is accessible to all, and only an interest in the subject is required.

The course syllabus and timetable can be found below:

Although the lifelong learning school will be online this year, we will help participants appreciate Cambridge and its history through a few special events!

These will include:

  • A virtual tour of the Churchill Archive (located in Cambridge) by the Director, Mr Allen Packwood.  This tour will take in highlights from the papers of Winston Churchill as well as from the Archive’s other important collections.
  • A talk on the distinctive Cambridge student experience, by a recent Cambridge graduate student.
  • A Girton Watch Party, to give participants the opportunity to see some short films showing Girton’s beautiful grounds and celebrating Girton’s powerful history.
  • A talk entitled ‘Packing Up the Nation: Saving London's Galleries and Museums in World War II’, by Dr Caroline Shenton.

There will also be some informal opportunities to meet other course participants.

At the end of the programme participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
