Mistress of Girton College
Pioneering. Progressive. Fearless.
Since its foundation in 1869 as the UK’s first residential institution for the higher education of women, Girton College has led the way in educational empowerment. The College has been fully mixed since 1979 and remains an inclusive, diverse, and supportive community that strives for success. Building upon its commitments to equality, sustainability and excellence, and a strong financial foundation, the College now seeks a new Mistress for October 2022 to lead the College forward.
The Mistress of Girton College provides leadership in pursuit of the College’s aims in education, learning and research. This involves overseeing the academic, social and personal well-being of all members of the College community and ensuring the sound management of the College’s finances and estates. The Mistress’s role is one of leadership and consensus-building. A critical element of the role is acting as an ambassador for the College, both in intercollegiate fora and beyond with major donors, external stakeholders, and alumni. The Mistress will bring a vision for how Girton shall develop and adapt to modern challenges and maintain its commitment to scholarly excellence.
Following the success of our current Mistress, Professor Susan J Smith, the ideal candidate will have outstanding interpersonal, leadership and diplomatic skills. They will have distinguished themselves in their chosen field, and must have a strong intellect as well as empathy for, and commitment to the work of, an academic community of international standing. They would ideally bring experience of strategic planning and leadership, an understanding of fundraising, financial awareness and experience of complex governance. They must possess excellent communication, ambassadorial and relationship-building skills and an awareness of the current issues in Higher Education.
This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a diverse and vibrant community that has been at the forefront of academic and societal advances since its foundation.
