People’s Portraits Event 2019

Date(s) - Saturday 28 September 2019
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Girton College

All alumni are warmly encouraged to attend the annual People’s Portraits event. The speaker this year will be Dr Victoria Bateman with the talk titled ‘Naked Feminism’.

Dr Victoria Bateman is Fellow in Economics at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and grew up in Oldham, Greater Manchester. She has written economic commentary for Bloomberg View, UnHerd and CapX, along with occasional thought pieces for The Guardian, The Telegraph and Times Higher Education, and has appeared on the BBC and ITV. Her latest book, “The Sex Factor: How Women made the West Rich”, featured at the 2019 Hay Festival and was The Guardian’s Book of the Day. To complement her writing, Victoria uses art and naked protest to highlight restrictions on women’s bodily freedoms and to confront the attitudes that result in such restrictions. In January 2019 she gave a live one-woman performance at the Cambridge Junction theatre, and her nude portraits have twice been exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London. Victoria’s work comes with the message that what’s personal is political – and economic.
