All alumni and friends are warmly invited to the Annual People’s Portraits Reception at 4pm in the Fellows’ Rooms on Saturday 22 September 2018.


During her talk ‘Sitting for a Portrait’, Dame Gillian will look at the process from the sitter’s point of view with comments from different writers.

Professor Dame Gillian Beer was a Fellow at Girton for 29 years 1965-1994 and is now an Honorary Fellow at the College. She was the King Edward VII Professor of English Literature 1994-2002 and President of Clare Hall 1994-2001. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Literature and holds Honorary Doctorates from eleven universities. Among her books are *Darwin’s Plots* (1983, third edition 2009) and *Alice in Space* (2016), which was awarded the 2017 Truman Capote Prize.

This year’s reception will mark the donation to the exhibition of Portrait of Libby Sheldon by Emma Wesley RP.
