Alumni Reception in Singapore 2023

Singapore Event 2018

The Mistress, Dr Elisabeth Kendall, was thrilled to meet Girtonians living in Singapore and the surrounding regions at a fantastic event on Saturday 25 March. This lively occasion was a great opportunity for Dr Kendall to hear from alumni in the area and to share with them the latest news from the College. We are very grateful to Karen Fawcett (1982) for hosting this gathering.

Tax effective giving and the Girton Singapore Scholarship

Girton is launching a second scholarship fund for Singaporean’s and PRs to attend Girton in 2023/24 via CCSS.

Cambridge Colleges Scholarships (Singapore) Ltd (CCSS”) has been established by Girton alumni as a non-profit IPC offering tax-efficient donations to Colleges of the University of Cambridge for scholarships / bursaries.

Singapore taxpayers may claim 250% deduction for qualifying donations. No fee is payable for this service for donations over GBP1000 per individual donation. All donated funds are passed through to the colleges.

Donations qualifying for tax relief are to benefit Singaporeans or Singapore permanent residents, who are, or will be undergraduates or post-graduates for Study or Research at any of the 31 Colleges of Cambridge University.

CCSS awarded the first scholarship, the Girton Postgraduate Awards Singapore Scholarship” in October 2022. The recipient, Hsu Chung Chuan (Michael), is a Singapore NTU graduate, now pursuing a PhD at Girton College with the Many Body Quantum Dynamics (MBQD), Atomic, Mesoscopic and Optical Physics (AMOP) group at Cavendish Laboratory.

Michaels current research at the University of Cambridge has major implications in the field of both fundamental physics and astronomy.  Michael had this to say about his Girton postgraduate award:

I am extremely thankful and honoured to be the recipient of the Girton Singapore Scholarship – it is such a support and has made a huge difference in my life here at Cambridge. Without a doubt, the improved financial stability meant that I had more time to fully focus on my research and lab work. In addition, it significantly lowered my stress and also improved my mental health as I do not have to worry as much about the cost of living here as I used to (I had to earn additional side income via demonstrating and supervision and had to live quite frugally to get by). Equally as important, I also had more time to spend quality time with friends, colleagues and loved ones. The time freed up also further enabled me to pursue my musical, sports and co-curricular interests outside of lab work for a much-needed work-life balance. All in all, the scholarship has dramatically improved my quality of life here at the University of Cambridge, and I will forever be grateful for receiving it.”

I would like to especially extend my gratitude to the donors: Dear donors of the Girton Singapore Scholarship, thank you very much! Without you, I would not have been where I have been now. Your help has made a massive impact to my quality of life here in Cambridge and opened up many avenues and connections that I would not have thought been possible. Words cannot describe my gratitude, and it would be an honour to continue staying in touch. Thank you!”

At least two scholarships are expected to be awarded for the 2023-4 academic year, one scholarship has been funded already by alumni and collections for a second scholarship are underway.
