Geographical Society Reunion Dinner

On Saturday 24 February 2018 the College is delighted to be hosting the biennial Geographical Society Dinner. All former Girton College geographers, Fellows and current students are warmly encouraged to attend.

The evening will begin with short, informal, presentations from current third year geographers of Girton, regarding their dissertation topics. In addition, we are delighted to announce that our guest speaker for the event will be Mr Mothusi Turner (2006). During his time at Girton, Mothusi became interested in the relationship between Africa and China, and chose for his BA dissertation to focus on Chinese development assistance to African Countries. This interest in China led Mothusi to pursue a two-year Master’s degree in Modern Chinese Studies at the University of Oxford. In addition to studying the politics, economics and history of modern China, he also studied Mandarin, spending six months in language immersion at Peking University in Beijing and six months at Taiwan National Normal University in Taipei. He started his career working for the European Union delegation to Taiwan, followed by a brief stint at Oxford Analytica, a political-risk analysis firm based in Oxford. Next, Mothusi joined the UK Civil Service Fast Stream, working in a number of Government Departments in both domestic and international roles. Since completing the Fast Stream, Mothusi has worked in the newly-created Department of International Trade, developing the UK’s future trade policy towards China.

Dinner details and tickets

The dissertation presentations will begin in the Fellows’ Rooms at 6.00pm. Reception drinks will follow these presentations at 7.00pm, before the formal meal in the Hall at 7.45pm. Following this, there will be post-dinner drinks served back in the Fellows’ Rooms. During the evening the Geographical Society will be running a raffle with the proceeds being allocated to the Dr Jean Grove Memorial Fund, which provides important grants for the undergraduate dissertation research of Girton geographers. If you are unable to attend the dissertation presentations, we still hope you will attend the drinks and dinner. The dress code will be lounge suits.

As presidents, we feel the dinner is important in the integration of past and present Girton geographers, as well as a fantastic opportunity to reunite with old colleagues and friends. We are pleased to be offering a seasonal and local menu for this dinner which will include a delicious vegetarian meal as a default option. It is, however, possible to choose the sustainable meat option on the booking form. Our goal is to support a more sustainable food system—one that benefits our health, our communities, and our environment.

The price of the evening is £55 per person and you are welcome to bring a guest. Current Geography students receive a small subsidy from this price.
