Usually 2 interviews: one with the Director of Studies to whom the portfolio is shown and one with a College Fellow in another subject. There will be discussion at both interviews of the relevance to architecture of the candidate's school and personal experience; the interview with the Director of Studies will seek particularly to establish the candidate's intellectual and creative potential for architecture whilst the second interview of twenty minutes is likely to focus more on the candidate's previous and current academic achievement and the range of their other skills and interests.

Architecture

Why choose Girton?

Girton is itself a lesson in Architecture, with three generations of buildings; from Victorian Britain, through the 30s modernist influence to prize-winning contemporary design and ambitious plans to transform some of our own buildings.

Like most other Colleges, Girton has a small but energetic community of Architecture students, and although few will have studied it before, most very quickly become utterly absorbed by the subject. This uniquely cross-disciplinary subject is particularly well-placed to flourish at Girton, in a setting that actively encourages interdisciplinary debate across the sciences, humanities and both the practical and fine arts. In particular, Architecture students benefit from the lively studio culture in the Faculty, and from close, interdisciplinary links with our Girton colleagues in related fields such as Engineering. Architecture is also supported by a well-stocked section on Art and Architecture within the College library.

Undergraduate information

The Architecture Department at Cambridge is currently the top-ranked RIBA-accredited school in the UK. The subject has a strong vocational aspect and most students go on to have leading and fulfilling careers within the profession. In recent years the department has also significantly expanded its research activities, with a number of new professorships, readerships and successful research programmes offering a wealth of post-graduate opportunities.

Undergraduate teaching is focused around the 'Design Studio', and all students have a desk space in the light-filled and award-winning studio building, designed by Mole Architects, at Scroope Terrace.

Graduate information

Masters courses currently offered by the Department of Architecture include MPhil in Environmental Design, MPhil in Architecture by Research, MSt in Interdisciplinary Design in the Built Environment (offered jointly with the Department of Engineering) and MSc in Building History.

Research and postgraduate students are admitted to the University by the Board of Graduate Studies. You must therefore apply centrally and not to the College, however you must be admitted to a College to be able to study at the University. To ensure that this is Girton you need to indicate this on your application form.

Career destinations

The majority of our graduates go on to pursue a career as an Architect or in another design-related field, although alumni have also gone to a variety of other destinations.
