London Girton Association

About us

What we do and how to join

The London Girton Association (LGA) arranges regular events for its members which are publicised in our termly Newsletter.

Anyone who is an alumnus of Girton College can join and we always welcome new members. You do not have to live or work in London, although bear in mind that most events are held in the London area.

Membership is £20 pa but if you’re not in paid employment it is £10 pa. The association is run by volunteers so after meeting administrative and events costs, any surplus funds are used to benefit Girton, often current students. For instance, the LGA currently supports an annual music award for a Girton student.

If you would like to join please download an application form and send it to the membership secretary at lga@girton.cam.ac.uk.

Forthcoming and Recent Events

Further information about these events can be found in the LGA’s Newsletter or by contacting the Association at lga@girton.cam.ac.uk.

2023

Tuesday 24 October, Visit to the new Lambeth Palace Library

11am - 12.30pm

We have arranged a private tour of this fascinating new building. Completed in 2020, it was designed by Wright and Wright

Architects to house the collection of the Library, previously located in a warehouse and thirteen separate rooms in Lambeth Palace.  The building is situated at the north end of the Palace gardens amongst mature trees, and its façade is a homage to the Tudor gate tower of Lambeth Palace itself.

The Library was founded in 1610 by Archbishop Richard Bancroft and is the historic library of the Archbishops of Canterbury, preserving the national archives of the Church of England.  The facilities of the new building are making all these records accessible to everyone.

The tour will include a behind the scenes look into the Conservation studio, the reading room and the 8th floor terrace, from which one can see the garden of the Palace (not open to the public).  The tour will then end with an opportunity to look at the two exhibitions that will be open:  Cardinal Pole in the exhibition room and Church Festivals on the mezzanine.

TO BOOK: the cost is £15 per person. Please email lga@girton.cam.ac.uk stating how many tickets you require and we will respond with details of how to pay by bank transfer or cheque.

Monday 13 November, LGA AGM 2023

5pm

Please join us on Zoom for our 2023 AGM. AGM papers will be sent to attendees including the Chair’s report, accounts and the general work of the Committee. Please email lga@girton.cam.ac.uk if you plan to attend and the Zoom link will be sent to you in time for the meeting.  All members are welcome.

Tuesday 28 November, Coffee Morning in Ealing

10.30am - 12.30pm

We are delighted that our next coffee morning will be hosted by Mary Sergeant at her house in Ealing. Come and join us for another relaxing morning with other Girtonians – everyone is very welcome! Mary’s house is close to Ealing Broadway tube station and we are very grateful to her for hosting us.

Please email lga@girton.cam.ac.uk if you plan to attend.

Recent Events: On the evening of 27 October 2022, thirteen members gathered at the Charles Dickens Museum in Doughty Street. This is the only extant house lived in by the author and we enjoyed a fascinating private tour, seeing many of Dickens’ personal possessions, including the desk where he wrote Nicholas Nickleby and Oliver Twist

Our second event of last Autumn was an online talk by Dr Amy Jeffs on 16 November 2022. Amy talked about her two books, Storyland and Wild: Tales from Early Medieval Britain. Members joined online for this intriguing look at these very early stories and their medieval source manuscripts. Our thanks go to Amy – and do look at her absorbing titles if you can; she has illustrated them herself with beautiful woodcuts.

Book Circle

The LGA Book Circle continues to thrive, with 15 members and 40 books read to date, a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. We meet on Zoom about every three weeks or so and read both fiction and non-fiction. We have just read Light Perpetual by Francis Spufford and our current choice is Black Tudors by Miranda Kaufmann. Members are welcome to join – just email lga@girton.cam.ac.uk.
