Stuart A Scott
Official Fellow and Director of Studies in Chemical Engineering
Dr Stuart Scott works in the Department of Chemical Engineering, investigating various aspects of combustion. He completed a Ph.D. on the combustion and gasification of waste fuels, before starting as a research fellow. His research interests are related to the combustion of solid fuels, and in particular how they can be utilised with a minimal negative impact on the environment. The combustion of fossil fuels such as coal results in the release of CO2 , which has been linked to global warming. Other environmental problems associated with solid fuels include the release of pollutants such as SOx, NOx, Dioxins. Alternative solid fuels, such as waste, wood, straw or energy crops grown specifically for fuel provide an alternative to coal, and in many cases could be CO2 neutral. Other research interests are include looking at ways of modelling the the behaviour of a particular type of combustor/reactor known as a fluidised bed.
