Useful Information

Nik Cunniffe

Official Fellow in Natural Sciences

Nik Cunniffe is a University Lecturer in the Department of Plant Sciences, and an Official Fellow and College Lecturer at Girton. He has a MA in Mathematics, a MPhil in Engineering and a PhD in Mathematical Biology, all from the University of Cambridge, together with a MSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Bath.

Research

He researches plant disease epidemics, using mathematical models to understand the invasion, spatio-temporal spread, persistence and control of plant pathogens. There are interesting questions at many scales, from the infection of individual plant organs such as leaves, roots and stems, to the spread of disease across entire continents. Further details of his research can be found at his departmental web page.

Teaching

He mainly teaches students studying Natural Sciences, lecturing Mathematical Biology to first year students, and has devised more specialised courses in Epidemiology and Statistics for Plant Scientists in later years. At Girton he supervises Mathematics for Natural Scientists, Mathematical Biology and Elementary Mathematics for Biologists. He also teaches on post-graduate courses in Mathematical Modelling organised by the Cambridge Infectious Diseases Consortium, and works part-time as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University.
