Harriet Allen
Official Fellow and Director of Studies in Geography
Dr Harriet Allen is an Official Fellow, and Director of Studies in Geography at the College. In addition, she is a University Lecturer at the Department of Geography specialising in physical geography, and particularly biogeography. Her research focuses on ecosystem responses to environmental changes (climatically and anthropogenically induced) at both contemporary and Holocene (the last 10,000 years) timescales. Much of this involves fieldwork in the Mediterranean. Further information on this can be found on the Department of Geography’s website http://www.geog.cam.ac.uk/people/allen.
In addition to her research, Harriet is committed to teaching and student welfare. In the Geography Department, she lectures in all three years of the Geographical Tripos and is the Director of Undergraduate Studies (2007–09) with responsibility for co-ordinating the Department’s undergraduate teaching programme. At Girton, Harriet is a tutor, member of the School’s Liaison Committee, and often participates in taster sessions run by the college for school students thinking of applying to university to read geography. An extension of this is her involvement in the Sutton Trust Summer Schools which are organised by the University for able students from non-privileged backgrounds.
Harriet can be contacted via email hda1@cam.ac.uk or at her departmental office on 01223 766576.
