ProgrammeSaturday, 22nd September 20122pm - Friends and Patrons of the Lawrence Room Event, Old KitchensDr Lucilla Burn, Keeper of Antiquities at the Fitzwilliam Museum, and expert in Greek vases and terracottas, will give an illustrated talk on Girton's Tanagra figures. Tanagras are small mould-cast terracotta statues of humans, animals and birds dating from the fourth and third centuries BC. Girton's collection is regarded as one of the finest of its kind in the world.
4pm - Friends of the People's Portraits Event, Fellows' Drawing RoomDr David Starkey, CBE, FBA, British constitutional historian, radio and TV presenter will be the Guest Speaker and 'open' the event which celebrates the annual addition to the People's Portraits Exhibition - this year donated by Toby Wiggins, a member of The Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
6pm - Piano Recital, Stanley LibraryHannah Watson, a current fourth-year modern linguist will perform before dinner. She has won a number of the top music prizes in College and the University. (There will be a retiring collection).
7 - 7.30pm - Roll Dinner, Dining HallThe Roll Dinner is open to all Roll Members and their guests; we are particularly encouraging 1952, 1962 and 1972 matriculants to attend. The Guest Speaker will be Professor Helen Atkinson FREng (Bavister 1978). Professor Atkinson, an internationally renowned engineer in the area of metallurgy, is Head of the Mechanics of Materials Group at the University of Leicester. In April she became the first woman in its fifty year history to be elected President of the Engineering Professors' Council. The title of her talk will be 'One WISE woman'.
