The Girton Roll
The Roll consists of all those who matriculate at Girton College. All graduates and those who leave the College, even if they do not gain a degree, automatically become members of the Roll. Graduates and Fellows who were at Girton automatically become members of the Roll when they join the College. Membership of the Roll is free.
The aim of the Roll is to provide a forum for Girtonians to keep in touch with the College and with each other, and to exchange expertise and information as appropriate. The Registrar of the Roll provides a focus within College for the various Regional Associations , assisting with advice for speakers, and addresses (within the constraints of the Data Protection Act) for those wishing to make contact with friends from the past.
We have now completed and compiled the third edition of the Register; a comprehensive record of past undergraduates and graduate students who matriculated between 1970 and 2000 and Fellows who were elected during that period. The Register is available as a hard copy or on CD.
Although it may work closely with the Development Office for many events and functions, the Roll has a quite separate function. The Registrar of the Roll, with the assistance of the Roll Committee, runs a number of annual events for Roll members. Details of these can be found in the Girton Annual Review, which is sent to all Roll members in the autumn of each year, and in the Roll Leaflet, which is sent out to members in March/April each year. The Roll Office also maintains information about Girton alumni, which will eventually be housed in our archives for the benefit of future generations.
The Roll Committee meets twice a year to organise events and is always pleased to receive suggestions for activities within its limited resources. Each 10-year period has a representative on the Roll Committee, as do the various Regional Associations. One of the Committee’s responsibilities is to develop activities for Roll members. To assist it in doing this it has set up a ‘Girton Project’ with a Steering Group chaired by Professor Deryn Watson, to oversee this programme. One of the priorities set by the Roll Committee is to strengthen links with the MCR, JCR and those who have recently left Girton. As part of this initiative, in November, 2007 the Roll, in collaboration with the JCR and MCR organised an evening event, ‘Life After Girton’ when several Girtonians spoke of the way they had managed their careers. This event was repeated in November 2008. From November 2009 the event evolved, inviting parents to join the students for the dinner whilst two or three key guest speakers gave talks on their 'Life after Girton'. It is now held biannually, the next 'Life after Girton' dinner will be in November 2012.
If you would like to help with events, represent your year group, start a regional association, be a member of one of the committees or help with the Girton Project, just get in touch with the Roll.
