Details and statistics
- Chemical Engineering is a four year course leading to the BA and MEng degrees, though it is possible to graduate after three years study with just the BA degree.
- Chemical Engineering students must first complete either 1 year of Natural Sciences (including Computer Science) or 1 year of Engineering, before moving to the department of Chemical Engineering for the remainder of their course.
- Applicants for Chemical Engineering via the Engineering route need Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at A-level (or equivalent qualification).
- Applicants for Chemical Engineering via the Natural Science or Computer Science route need Chemistry and Mathematics at A-level (or equivalent qualification). Physics or a Mathematics course which covers mechanics at AS or A-level is also required.
- Further Mathematics and Biology at AS or A-level can be helpful.
- The interview arrangements for Chemical Engineering applicants are the same as those for candidates applying for Engineering Tripos and Natural Sciences Tripos. Please consult the relevant pages for these courses for more information.
Chemical Engineering at Girton
Chemical Engineers are involved in the processing of materials to create more valuable products. This entails understanding molecules and how they interact (molecular scale) through to the design of industrial processes (macro-scale). Thus, the Cambridge course covers the fundamental science behind processes and products at scales from the very small to very large. There are excellent employment prospects for graduates of the course, particularly in the chemical, process and food industries, but also in other areas including biotechnology, finance and management.
- A course guide is available on the Department of Chemical Engineering website.
