Architecture
Fellows
- Ms Elizabeth King (Director of Studies)
Details and statistics
- Number of students admitted per year (average over 2008-2010): 1
- Entry requirements: no specific A levels although a spread across the arts and sciences is helpful. Where a candidate is unable to sit A levels, offers can be made on the basis of other examinations such as the IB. A selected portfolio of artwork is essential (see below).
- Typical offer: A*AA
- Interview arrangements: usually 2 interviews: one with the Director of Studies to whom the portfolio is shown and one with a College Fellow in another subject. There will be discussion at both interviews of the relevance to architecture of the candidate’s school and personal experience; the half hour interview with the Director of Studies will seek particularly to establish the candidate’s intellectual and creative potential for architecture whilst the second interview of twenty minutes is likely to focus more on the candidate’s previous and current academic achievement and the range of their other skills and interests.
- Portfolio: The portfolio typically will contain 10–15 selected recent pieces that demonstrate the range and quality of the candidate’s skills. The quality of the pieces in the portfolio is clearly important but the interviewer will take into account the amount of art teaching that has been available to the candidate. Sketch books and work generated by enthusiasm rather than duty are most useful. Guidance on work suitable for inclusion in the portfolio may be found in the Department of Architecture Admissions Prospectus (BA Tripos), available on its website or directly from the Department: 01223 33 29 50.
Architecture at Girton
Girton usually has one or two students per year studying Architecure, who are able to take advantage of the extensive collection of Architecure literature in the College library. Students also use the Department of Architecure and History of Art library which has an excellent collection of journals and books of direct relevance to the course. Students will have approximately six hours of lectures per week and twice weekly studio supervisions in the department. The course also entails a multitude of site visits, trips and design workshops. The student workload is intense and is undertaken in a highly creative environment. Girton students are encouraged to particpate in the Architecture Society, 'ArcSoc', which is run by the students and organises weekly events, lectures and life drawing classes.
