Sport
One of the advantages of living at Girton is the wide range of on-site sports facilities; these include hockey, football, rugby and cricket pitches, tennis, squash, basketball and volleyball courts, a multigym and a croquet lawn. Girton is the only Cambridge college to have its own indoor heated swimming pool which is used regularly by a large number of students.
Sports clubs cater for all abilities and many students who have never regarded themselves as sporting types participate just for enjoyment. There are very competitive inter-college league and cup competitions and Girton fields men’s and women’s teams in football, rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis. There are also swimming, table tennis, squash, darts, water polo, badminton and croquet teams.
Rowing is a very popular sport in Cambridge and many Girtonians take the chance to try out rowing at some time during their undergraduate careers; we share a boathouse on the Cam and usually have several men’s and women’s eights rowing in the Lent and Easter Bumps.
There are also many different University sporting societies which are open to members of all colleges, so there are opportunities to participate in a very wide variety of different sports.
