Life at Girton
Founded by Emily Davies in 1869 as the first residential college for women, Girton was established on its present site in 1872 where, over the following fifty years, its impressive red brick and terracotta main buildings and extensive grounds and gardens were developed. To celebrate its centenary in 1969, the College built a smaller and more intimate modern annexe at Wolfson Court in Clarkson Road, near to the city centre.
Girton is one of the largest undergraduate colleges in Cambridge, with around 500 undergraduates and 160 postgraduates. We admit about 150 undergraduates each year, recruiting our students from a broad spectrum of social, educational, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. There are roughly equal numbers of men and women amongst the Fellowship and the students and we maintain an even balance between those reading arts and those reading science subjects.
