Studetns reading in the library The College Library is one of Girton’s greatest assets. With a stock of some 95,000 books and 120 periodicals, it has one of the largest and most self-sufficient of the student collections in Cambridge. We aim to buy most recommended reading for Part I of every tripos and as much as possible for Part II, according to budget and demand. Girton’s collection is very comprehensive indeed and the College has always regarded its Library as a central feature of its academic life. We welcome suggestions and requests for further acquisitions from our students. The Library is staffed by a full time Librarian and Assistant Librarian and several Library Assistants, with graduates helping in the evenings. It is currently open until 11 o’clock most nights, and provides a pleasant and comfortable place in which to work.

Girton’s library keeps abreast of developments in other higher education libraries. Information and research is now as much electronically based as hard-text orientated, and a small IT Resources Centre in the Library allows students to make full use of the academic network and other internet resources with the help and advice of the librarians. The computers in the IT Resources Centre are also loaded with various software applications for student use.

The library complex at Wolfson Court offers extensive study facilities to all members of College. It comprises two library collection rooms: the Fletcher-Moulton Reading Room houses general reference works and a large study area, and the Poppy Jolowicz Law Library holds the College’s law collection. The Law Library also has two networked computers for the exclusive use of law and land economy students.
