The JCR
The Junior Combination Room (JCR) is both a common room and the organisation of undergraduates in the College. It provides the focus for informal socialising, discos and other events.
The JCR area contains a spacious reading room with a TV and video and an underground bar; the bar is open every night and is very popular with the students. Other College rooms can be booked for clubs and societies, meetings, events and dinners.
The JCR committee, elected by and from all Girton undergraduates, organises various social and other events and represents students and their views on bodies which control College affairs such as the College Council. The JCR helps decide funding levels to College clubs and societies and provides a democratic forum for comment and debate.
There is a wide variety of student-run societies catering for all sorts of tastes including an amateur dramatic society, a film society, and a number of subject societies. There is also a well-equipped darkroom for keen photographers.
Each year the JCR organises a scheme whereby new first year students are allocated a ‘College parent’ who contacts his or her ‘College child’ to give advice and reassurance in the weeks leading up to, and at the start of, the first term. This provides a great network of friends when you first arrive and there are, as a result, some very extended families in College, with brothers and sisters, grandparents and sometimes even great grandparents!
