Graduates
There is a large, diverse, and yet cohesive graduate student community at Girton, around 170 at any one time. About one third of the graduate body tends to come from Girton undergraduates, with the other two thirds from other universities in the UK, Europe and overseas.
Girton offers competitive scholarships, available to intending and established graduates. Of the graduate population, 75% are likely to be registered for MPhil or PhD research degrees, the remainder for taught advanced courses.
Girton recognises that the circumstances and needs of most graduate students often differ from those of undergraduates. The Graduate Tutors, one for arts and one for science, look after graduate interests generally and are available for personal consultation by graduates on all matters. There are travel grants and bursaries available and there is residential accommodation on site and in College hostels, dedicated for the use of graduate students who wish to have College accommodation. It is possible to accommodate over half of the graduate students in College accommodation at any one time.
Girton regards graduate students as a crucial element of what it takes to achieve a balanced scholarly community, and encourages its graduates to participate fully in the corporate and social life of the College. The Middle Combination Room (MCR), as well as being a comfortable common room, is also the entity that represents, through its own elected officers, the interests of graduate students on the College Council and its committees. It organises a social programme, specifically for graduate students, to supplement the College activities to which all resident members
of Girton have access.
