Getting About
In common with other Cambridge students most Girton students rely on their bikes as a means of getting around; it takes about 10–15 minutes to cycle into town. Most students will cycle directly into town along the Huntingdon Road and down Castle Hill, but there is also a pleasant cycle route across the University Farm leading directly to the University departments which are expanding rapidly toward Girton on the west side of Cambridge. There is also a good regular local bus service to the city centre.
The amount of time you will spend in Girton during the day and in the evening will depend very much upon your subject and your outside interests. If you are a science student you may cycle into town early in the morning to return later in the afternoon after attending lectures and practicals for most of the day; if you are reading an arts subject you may spend only a couple of hours at lectures and classes in town, whilst the rest of the day you will work in your room or in the library at Girton. You might choose to do some sport in the afternoon either at Girton or in another college. In the evening you may decide to go into town or remain in Girton where you can relax with your friends in the College bar or write that essay which is due in tomorrow.
