Girton College Hockey Club
Hockey is a long running sport of the College and well supported at Girton. The hockey club regularly fields one men's and one women's team in the inter-college leagues. As a social opportunity to play hockey, or if you cannot commit a substantial amount of your time to University hockey, college hockey is great! There are also plenty of social opportunities, like organised meals out and the annual hockey dinner to look forward to.
The standards vary between colleges and fluctuates over the years as players come and go. There are 4 men's and 3 women's divisions, each with six to nine teams. GCHC are currently in Div. 2 for men's and women's.
We play on astro turf pitches in and around Cambridge. There are five to six matches each term for the men's team, and six to seven matches for the women's team spread across the first two terms.
The men's league works with two 'seasons' per year, with one promotion and one relegation from each division at the end of each term (Michaelmas and Lent). The women's league works as a single season per year, so there is one promotion and one relegation from each league at the end of Lent term. There is also an annual Cuppers competition, which runs as a knock-out format. Cuppers is available for men, women and mixed teams.
Whether you have played hockey before, or want to come and give it a try, there's space on both teams for all abilities.
