Rules for the Use of Girton College Computer Facilities
Please note that these rules are in addition to any provided by the University of Cambridge Information Strategy and Services Syndicate and should read in conjunction with the College's Data Protection Policy and Internet Use Policy.
College Computer Room Facilities
The machines in the College Computer rooms are now managed by the University Computing Service’s Public Workstation Facility (PWF).
- Academic software programs are distributed centrally by the PWF and are determined on an annual basis. All other software provided on the machines is the property of the College and subject to licence and copyright restrictions. The College is unable to provide copies of software to any member of College.
- The College accepts no responsibility for the integrity of any program or data stored on College equipment. The onus is on the individual to save their data on the network user areas provided on the PWF and/or to backup data on other media.
Computer Room Problems
If you discover any problems with the College network or equipment in the College Computer Rooms, please contact the Computer Office describing the location of the machine/equipment and a summary of the problem.
If the problem poses a health and safety risk to other members of College, contact the Computer Office and/or Porters’ Lodge immediately. Do not attempt to fix the problem yourself.
Connecting to the College network
- Privately owned equipment may only be connected to the College network with the permission of the Computer Office. Students will be asked to register their details via an online system at the beginning of Term.
- All network users must have an up-to-date anti-virus program installed on their machine and are expected to take reasonable care not to introduce viruses to the network.
- The cost of internet access in College rooms is incorporated in the Students’ Residence Charge. Additional costs may be passed to students if the internet traffic (monitored by the University Computing Service) exceeds acceptable limits due to abuse of the system.
- If users of the College network are required to store and process personal data, they must do so in accordance with the College’s Data Protection Policy.
Unacceptable Use
- It is forbidden to transmit, store or display offensive and illegal material using any College facility. This point should be borne in mind if posting to newsgroups in particular (see the Internet Use Policy).
- It is forbidden to establish, maintain or manage commercial activities on behalf of an external organisation on the College network. Any activities of this nature discovered on the network will result in disciplinary action.
- Any person in breach of these rules will have their accounts and Ethernet connection suspended pending an investigation by the Computer Office and Senior Tutor. Disciplinary action will be determined by the severity of the problem and may result in the removal of all rights to use the College Computing facilities.
