If you wish to bring your own computer to College please be aware of the following:

Windows version

Please make sure that you are not running Windows 2000 or earlier as this is no longer supported.

Ethernet Connection to College Network

If you wish to connect to the network you will need an Ethernet Card installed (UTP/RJ45).

Anti-virus software

You must ensure that you have Anti-Virus software installed on your computer as soon as possible after you arrive.

Anti-Virus software is free from the University when you arrive; this is preferable as we will be able to support it. Norton Antivirus, although a good product has been known to fail to clean recent infections that have propagated throughout the College/University.

All networked machines must be kept up to date with security fixes at all times, available from the Microsoft Update Site.

Wireless connections

Laptops: We have recently installed a number of University Wireless devices. They are positioned to cover mainly common areas rather than rooms. You must NOT install wireless access points in your room without explicit permission from the Computer Officer. Rooms will be disconnected if found!

Hardware or software problems

If you need help with your machines please see the Computer Office. Please note however, that laptop hardware problems can be looked at by the Computer Office but are generally not repaired.

Please ask in advance to have your computer looked at for any reason. DO NOT turn up with your laptop as it will not be looked at without an appointment.
