Song to Wolfson Court
By Anna Cocconi (President of the J.C.R.) 1972
Wolfson Court was opened in 1972 and rapidly turned into an essential part of the College. A new song, written by the President, was a fitting tribute!
The third verse has a reference to a shop, which did not last very long, as staffing problems were acute
The presents from Miss Beryl Power and other Old Girtonians, can still be identified.
Tune: Clementine
Lyrics
Chorus:
Girton College, Girton College,
Times have changed and so have you,
Yet your aims remain as ever:
Educate the women too!
In a wheat field, west of Cambridge,
Off a lane called Clarkson Road,
Wolfson Court is standing proudly;
Let its story now be told
Hundred rooms with running water,
Could you ever ask for more?
Not unless you choose a boy-friend,
Meas’ring over five foot four!
In the mornings, bright and early,
You can run down to the shop,
If it’s open she’s remembered,
If it isn’t, she has not.
Load your tray with cakes and omelets,
Move along to get your tea,
But you must not be too greedy,
It should total twenty p.
Night attractions are not many,
But a bar we do provide,
Alcohol will kill you slowly;
It’s preferred to suicide.
Old Girtonians send us presents,
From as far as Pakistan:
Chandeliers, though big and heavy,
Must be placed as best we can.
Give them keys to keep them quiet,
Keep those militants in line,
After all it’s just a hostel,
Girton’s image is still fine!
Chorus:
