Girton College Sports Pitch Announcement
The College is pleased to announce that the Sports Pitch project is complete and the new grounds have been tested thoroughly by the Football and Rugby teams playing alongside each other now, rather than taking turns as they had to do on the former overlapping pitches. The ground works went very smoothly and despite the best efforts of the rabbits, the grass seed germinated quickly so we did not have to endure the view of bare soil for very long. The netting along the A14 (preventing the escape of wayward rugby balls) is much less obtrusive than we imagined.
Completion of the project has spurred on fundraising initiatives for our planned Sports Pavilion. Girton has always recognised the importance of sport in the health and social development of students and has recently set up a sports committee to co-ordinate and manage the large variety of sporting activities undertaken in College. For many students, regular exercise is crucial to maintaining equilibrium in the “pressure cooker” of the intensive Cambridge term and Girton‘s students now have an impressive range of facilities on site, including a squash court, swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, netball and basketball courts. On-site full size sports pitches add another dimension to College life and are much envied by visiting sports teams.
Those who prefer the gentler sport of walking around the College grounds can note with satisfaction that the new facility brings with it a commitment to extensive tree and hedge planting over several years. Girton’s gardens and grounds already provide a rich and varied habitat for wildlife and wildflowers and we are becoming increasingly aware of the strategic importance of this unique green space for the local area.
