The Chaplain

Revd Dr Malcolm Guite is the College Chaplain. Malcolm is available to all members of College, and is happy to see people in confidence for any reason. He is part-time and is around College and Wolfson Court in Full Term on Sunday afternoon and evening, Tuesday evening, all day Wednesday and Thursday morning and evening.
He can be contacted at other times by email: mg320@cam.ac.uk

Do feel free to drop in during those times, or else call him (38956). Malcom is more than happy to see you in person, talk on the phone or be in contact by email, if that is best for you. The Porters’ Lodge can also contact Malcolm in an emergency.

Services

Our main Sunday service is a 5:30pm Choral Evensong, supported by Girton's excellent choir and also featuring distinguished visiting preachers. There is a brief informal communion available after this service, which ends in time for those who wish to go through to a cafeteria supper in hall, followed by other refreshments in the Fellows Drawing Room. The choir is usually away on tour one Sunday in each term and on those occasions we have an informal student-led service in chapel, also at 5:30pm. For other services on special occasions consult the chapel term card, also on this site.

The Chapel also hosts Sung Compline at 10pm on Tuesdays, which is a particularly refreshing way to relax, and is especially popular in exam term. Other services may be found in the Termcard, issued to each student at the start of each term.

The Chapel has a prayer-space sectioned off by screens at the back, which anyone is welcome to use at any time. Prayer-requests may be pinned on the noticeboard there anonymously. There is also a collection of books, including some on bereavement and counselling, which may be borrowed, in addition to the counselling books which may be borrowed anonymously from the main College Library.

The Chapel is funded by the College, Alumni and other donations, and so all collection monies are donated to a charity, selected by the Chapel Committee. Michaelmas Term normally has a local charity, Lent a national one and Easter an international one. A different charity may receive offerings given at the popular Advent Carol Service.

Chapel Wardens

Girton’s Chapel Wardens assist the Chaplain in all practical matters relating to Chapel. If you’d like to join Malcolm’s merry band, and get the possiblity of riding on his Harley, please email him – we always need volunteers. The Chapel Wardens may be approached if you want to read, lead the prayers or if you have any other contribution to make. As the photo shows, we also have great social events.

Chapel Committee

Chapel Committee meets once a term and discusses all issues relating to Chapel life. The minutes of recent meets are available for users on the Girton Intranet. Suggestions for agenda items are welcome, and may be directed to the Chaplain, Dr Roland Randall, the Organ Scholars or Chapel Wardens.

Student Christian Organisations

Other Christian organisations, run by students, operate in College and are entirely independent of the Chaplaincy. More information on their activities may be obtained by emailing the contacts to be found on the term card.
