Formal Hall

Sherry for Fellows and graduate students (the MCR) is served in the Fellows Drawing room from 6.45pm. Coffee is also served there after Hall.

Girton has one of the largest halls in the University and a well attended Formal Hall is an important occasion for undergraduates, graduates, their guests and the Fellows to meet socially. It is an occasion when members of the College can take pleasure in dining together. It is important to remember that it is a formal occasion and only continues with College members accept and respect its conventions. it is customary to stand when the Mistress and other senior members enter the Hall and until grace is said. Also to stand again when senior members leave the Hall at the end of the meal. You are normally expected to remain seated for the whole of the meal, which is served.

Guests may be brought to Formal Hall on all but the first and last Thursdays of each Full Term. If you are a fellow you must sign yourself and any guest in by 11.00am on Thursday morning. If you are a student, tickets, both for yourself and guests must be bought in advance, online up to 2.00pm on Wednesdays. Tickets will be charged to your College card.

If you are a student Parties of more than two guests at Formal Hall require the permission of the Senior Tutor (a pink slip); the host must undertake responsibility for his or her guests on a form supplied. Groups of guests should not number more than 30 in total. Names of all guests must be supplied to the Conference Office 10 days before the meal, with a list of names and dietary requirements. When large groups of guests attend Formal Hall every 10 guests must have a separate host. Students are expected to keep noise levels such as not to inhibit conversation on neighbouring tables, to refrain from moving around the dining hall, and generally to show respect to other members of the College. A reasonable standard of dress is expected, and gowns must be worn. If you wish to take alcohol with your meal you may bring a bottle of wine for yourself and guests, but not beer or spirits. It is expected that alcohol will be consumed in moderation and any diner considered to be drinking excessively will be required to leave Hall.
